Code of conduct
Purpose
We seek to foster a safe, inclusive, respectful, and productive learning environment for all students, instructors, and staff during the three‑week Summer School. This Code of Conduct sets expectations for behavior, and describes how concerns or misbehavior will be handled.
1. Scope
This Code of Conduct applies to all participants in the Summer School: students, instructors, guest speakers, staff, and all associated personnel. It covers all activities connected with the program (academic, social, residential, online, in person, etc.).
2. Expected Behavior
Each participant is expected to:
- Treat everyone with respect, courtesy, and dignity, regardless of background, identity, belief, or ability.
- Be inclusive: listen to others, value different perspectives, avoid discriminatory or harassing behavior.
- Act with integrity in all academic work: no plagiarism or cheating; give credit where due.
- Be punctual and prepared for all scheduled academic, social, and group activities.
- Follow safety, health, and facility guidelines: e.g. fire safety, lab safety, health protocols.
- Respect shared spaces (residence rooms, classrooms, common rooms): clean up after themselves, observe quiet hours, be considerate.
- Use communication (in person, email, social media) responsibly: avoid language or content that is harassing, threatening, or demeaning.
- Follow instructions from Summer School organizers and staff.
3. Prohibited Behavior
Examples of behavior that are not allowed include, but are not limited to:
- Harassment, discrimination, or abuse of any kind (verbal, physical or sexual).
- Bullying, intimidation, or coercion.
- Retaliation in response to behaviour you disagree with, including (but not limited to) reporting misconduct.
- Academic dishonesty: cheating, plagiarism, misrepresenting one’s work.
- Illegal activities, including possession or use of prohibited substances.
- Theft, vandalism, or damage to property.
- Violating rules of residence: unauthorized visitors, entering others’ rooms without permission, causing disruptions or excessive noise during late hours.
4. Reporting Misconduct
If you witness or experience behavior that violates this Code, you are encouraged to report the issue to any CSHA staff (who will be available in the office during working hours) or any one of the organizers. If you prefer to report via email, please copy all organizers so that one of us can respond promptly.
All reports will be taken seriously; confidentiality will be maintained as far as possible (while ensuring due process and safety).
5. Consequences of Violations
Potential steps if someone violates the Code:
- Informal resolution: discussion with organizers, reminder or verbal warning.
- Formal warning: written notice, possibly limitation of privileges (e.g. access to certain activities).
- Removal from certain activities or residential status changes.
- Suspension or expulsion from the Summer School without refund.
- Notification of external authorities if required (e.g. laws broken, risk to safety).
We strive for fairness: students will be informed of allegations, have an opportunity to respond, and consequences will be proportional to the infraction.
Note: In serious cases, such as threat to others, harassment, discrimination, or illegal conduct, organizers may move directly to higher levels of consequence.
6. Commitment
By accepting a place in the Summer School, participants agree to abide by this Code of Conduct for the entire duration of the program.
